Cultivating for Resilience--Evolving Sunset Park

Sunset Park is one of the most diverse neighborhood in all of New York.  On 8th Avenue one experiences Chinatown, at a smaller and denser scale than the one in Manhattan.  Walking across to 5th Avenue, however, turns into a Hispanic neighborhood, and walking between the two avenues area like going on a trip to China and then to Latin America--all within 4 blocks of a small community within Brooklyn.

On top of this diverse neighborhood, Sunset Park i also home to a very active waterfront, where the city has named to be the waterfront with the "highest job density and highest vacancy."  Unfortunately, because of the poor maintenance of the piers and the industrial nature of the waterfront, the community has very limited access to it.

For our thesis, my thesis partner Robert Hughes and I decided to "plant" initial buildings and programs in key locations to make it an initiative for the community to interact with each other and allow more access to the waterfront.  Our ultimate goal is to have our incentives be active for the decades to come, even after the dynamic of the neighborhoods may change.
