KL Sports City

Designed in collaboration with POPULOUS. The Phase 1 of KL Sports City’s lighting design was an embodiment of the Architect’s philosophy, the local culture, client’s aspirations of a brilliant purpose centred development. The overall results has already stimulated economical and social growth to the surrounding precinct, creating an iconic development that the local Malaysians can be proud of.

The Bukit Jalil Stadium with it’s new striking twisting blades facade, is a reminiscent of the stripes of the Malayan tiger; it allows the operators to create a fully bespoke visual for every event with it’s integrated lighting.
The Facade lights with a controlled pitch of the LED nodes, allows for close and far away visuals of the graphical displays. A bespoke trio purposes luminaire are placed in between each of the blades, blending in as part of the Architecture. It allows for a highly ecological illumination of two blades surfaces, eliminating the need of having 2 luminaires at each blade, illuminates the roof ring structure, and at the twisting juncture of the blades, reflecting some light inwards to the existing iconic skeleton structures, adding layers of depth to the stadium.

The contemporary building fabric of Axiata Arena is illuminated such that lights are radiate through the perforation panels, allowing a play of light and shade; creating a distinctive form and identity, that complements the main Bukit Jalil Stadium. The luminaires and its auxiliaries are concealed within an Architecture tray detail, that were designed to form as part of the edifice with minimal electrical and visual disruption to the existing building.

New shaded canopies were constructed over the boulevard, linking the light rail station and various sports venues. Each column are up-lighted in blue, reflecting the journey that induce calm and authority, if ever the spectators are upset with the result of the games. This leads to the last arena: the National Aquatic Centre, that was illuminated to create a “glowing lantern” expression. The new Facade glazings are fritted on the upper portion, with the integrated down lighting, optimally portrait a new colour identity for the international graded swimming arena.
