(Colloboration Lechner Lechner Schallhammer) The Winklhof, an agricultural school located in Oberalm near Salzburg, has undergone a thoughtful transformation with the addition of a new boarding wing, enhancing the existing atrium-centered layout of the school complex. The design strategically positions the new structure at a deliberate distance from the original ensemble, establishing its autonomy while reinforcing the coherence of the overall typology. This intentional separation is bridged only on the first floor by a connecting walkway, maintaining a respectful balance between integration and independence.
At the heart of the design is an orangery that serves multiple purposes. Positioned to face the courtyard, this dynamic space prioritizes communal engagement, offering a versatile environment for leisure, socialization, and cultural activities. It acts as the primary entrance to the school, seamlessly linking the northern school wing and providing a sheltered area suitable for exhibitions, presentations, celebrations, games, and informal interactions.
Rather than modifying the attic of the existing structure, two classrooms were added to the ground floor of the new wing. The existing staircase in the original building was left untouched, with a new staircase and elevator incorporated into the extension. This staircase not only provides vertical circulation but also functions as a pivotal element, connecting the orangery with the dormitory spaces.
The spatial layout of the dormitory is meticulously organized in a dual-aspect configuration. Each room offers expansive views of the Schlenken mountain to the east and the Untersberg to the west, framed by large bay windows designed for sitting or reclining. Adjacent to these windows, smaller ventilation openings on either side ensure a sense of privacy and a homely atmosphere for residents.
The facade is composed of vertical wooden slats, a design choice that celebrates the material’s agricultural origins. These slats are strategically spaced near window openings to provide ventilation, shading, and a soft interplay of light, fostering a warm and serene living environment. The communal lounges within the dormitory serve as hubs of interaction, linking the orangery to the individual rooms and encouraging a sense of connection among students.
Constructed using a structural timber system (CLT) , the extension underscores the importance of wood as a natural and sustainable material, showcasing its warmth and tactile qualities through exposed solid wood panels. This choice not only aligns with the agricultural focus of the school but also establishes a nurturing and comfortable environment. Furthermore, the building adheres to passive house standards, exemplifying energy efficiency and sustainable design.
This intervention at Winklhof harmoniously balances tradition with modernity, creating a thoughtfully crafted, functional, and sustainable addition that enhances the educational and residential experience of its students.
