The Missing Link addresses the two missing components inhibiting Downtown San Diego from becoming a cohesive and complete community; affordable housing and a middle school for grades six through. The middle school located on-site takes advantage of the existing warehouse and converts it into a designated joint-use educational facility for middle school students in grades six through eight as well as the adjacent community college's annex for night-time classes. To maximize affordability for very-low to moderate income households, it is imperative to re-evaluate how developers build high-rise housing. Therefore, there is no added parking (no subterranean parking garage) as there are two large parking structures across the street that rents out spaces to the public. Additionally, it is important to maximize density on-site to address the affordability housing crisis as well as to make this project more feasible. And lastly, integrating sustainable and passive design techniques will reduce the environmental impact and energy consumption.
