With the expansion of the REDCAT that is currently located in theback half of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, current conditions leave the space undesireable and stuck in a space that would only grow bigger for the LA Philharmonic. Its new location is located o of Broadway, which currently houses many other theatres and performance spaces. Its history is fitting to the new location of the REDCAT to tie into its surroundings.
The idea started with the concept of being able to unfold a single surface over a large area. Major concerns for the site include the surrounding buildings enclosing the space and entrance to the theatre. To contrast the current architecture, a large void will stand as the entrance for those to be invited into the open public space. Lighting is also a major issue. After conducting light studies, the best way to allow light to enter the building was to create another large void that split through the building toward the back closer to the two adjacent buildings. This way the areas with the darkest shadows would be able to be lighter. The shape of the void was taken from the idea of the aperture of a camera. As for the black box, it is located at the top of the building where there is the most room and lets viewers get a grand view of the city from higher up.
