Bondi Beach Houses

Bondi Beach is a popular beach located 7 km east of the Sydney central business district. It receives many visitors throughout the year. Bondi beach has commercial area along Campbell Parade and adjacent streets, featuring many popular cafes, restaurants and hotels with views of the beach.
Although the site is located on the northern part of the Bondi beach area away from the main street venues and the beach, it is on the Campbell Parade and also has fragmented views of the popular Bondi beach.
Bondi or “Boondi” is an aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks or noise of water breaking over rocks. The brief was the design an apartment of 6 units on a sloping site.
Instead of creating an building block of 6 various units, the main intent of the project was to create 6 each individual residences sitting on the sloping site, creating unique individual houses that also unites as one complete building when viewed together. The nature of the design proposal required careful articulation to provide privacy while allowing sunshine, passive solar gains as well as views towards the beach. It was also part of the council regulation that each house had at least one parking space of their own.
The main concept of the project was that each individual houses lifted above ground to secure much needed views of the beach and the building resemble the aboriginal meaning of “boondi”. The aim was to design a building that seems as if water and the wave was to break on the water break.
