Columbia Boathouse - 2013

A boathouse and training facility for the Columbia University Rowing team and a community generated rowing team. Two separate sheds hold the boats and oars for both teams leaving the central interior space to bridge both community and scholarship. The open training area is positioned to gain an optimal view of the adjacent Harlem River. An outdoor seating space embodies this same concept as it sits between the two outdoor decks leading from the sheds to the dock.

Metal cladding and large glass curtain walls give this boathouse a more contemporary feel and accentuate the undulating curvature of the roof, a form inspired by the stages of rowing as the wingspan of the rower contracts and expands to pull the boat through the water.
