Sorry for the delay, see below for some 2013 updates! (See links below the text for more information)
DEAN:
Prof. C. Richard Cole has received a permanent appointment as the dean of SPSU’s School of Architecture and Construction Management (ACM), effective July 1.
“After a meeting with the chairs and faculty of the departments of Architecture and Construction Management, the overwhelming consensus was that Dean Cole had done an outstanding job in the interim role,” said Dr. Zvi Szafran, vice president for Academic Affairs. “His commitment to communication and openness about his plans for the future of the school were ambitious and inclusive of both departments.”
That vision for the future direction of both departments was one of the driving forces behind the decision to make his interim position permanent – the majority of faculty felt Dean Cole should have more time to carry out his vision, he explained. Regarding his personal evaluation of Dean Cole, Dr. Szafran said, “He has done an outstanding job in bringing the two departments together, and he is leading the School of ACM in a very productive direction.”
CHAIR:
Tony Rizzuto, PhD., has been named as Chair of the SPSU Department of Architecture.
Professor Rizzuto’s Ph.D. explored the relationship between philosophy and architecture. Examining three distinct moments in the history of western philosophy, the work traces the impact of their epistemological structures on the development of western architectural theory, resulting in three distinct approaches to tectonics; Classical Tectonics, Rational Tectonics and Poetic Tectonics.
He is also interested in urban theory and design and has been actively involved in planning and zoning in the City of Atlanta for the past five years, chairing the Midtown Land Use Committee and serving on the Development Review Committee for SPI-16 and 17.
OTHER FACULTY NEWS FROM 2013:
SEPT. 24, 2013 – During the summer, groups of SPSU’s architecture students traveled to Paris and Barcelona in search of inspiration, knowledge and adventure on two study-abroad “architours.” Prof. Ed Akins led students in Paris in completing eight-day courses and visiting architectural studios, while another group of students joined Prof. Michael Carroll for similar activities in Barcelona.
AUG. 14, 2013 – A gallery show on Aug. 1 marked the end of the Summer Design Workshop required of incoming Design Foundation architecture students in SPSU’s five-year Bachelor of Architecture program. The workshop consisted of nine full days filled with lectures, studio work and instruction on the elements and principles of design for incoming architecture freshmen and non-design transfer students.
The summer workshop introduces the basic skills needed to be a successful architecture student. The 95 students enrolled gained an understanding of studio culture, its methodology and the functionality and aesthetics of design.
JUNE 24, 2013 – Prof. Liz Martin, assistant professor of architecture, has been appointed to a three-year term as editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed Civil Engineering and Architecture Journal.
She has more than 10 years of experience as the United States overseas editor of Monument, an Australian design magazine.
Her goal is to work closely with the Horizon Research Publishing editorial board to create two separate journals, one for each discipline by next year.
MARCH 28, 2013 -- Dr. Saleh Uddin, professor of architecture at SPSU, recently won a prestigious competition held to design a multi-purpose facility housing several components of the exclusive social organization, the Gulshan Club, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The 450,000-square-foot building will include a gymnasium, auditorium, lounge, swimming pool, lodging for executives and a five-star hotel.
