Hill Courtyard House

Located within the Brisbane suburb of Camp Hill the Hill Courtyard House sits on a large elevated lot with opportunities to capture expansive city views to the north east. Excavation allowed for the establishment of a basement level to accommodate vehicles within the site. This cleared the ground plane enabling the creation of a generous uninterrupted courtyard space to be the center of the home.

The dual living zones, kitchen and dining areas surround the central courtyard - all having access to the garden, abundant natural light and breezes. The material palette favors simplicity using brick, stone and board form concrete at the ground level and rendered brick on the upper level.

Nestled on a gently sloping site, the design prioritises a connection with the landscape, while also fostering a sense of privacy and retreat for its inhabitants. At the heart of the Hill Courtyard House is the central courtyard, which serves as a light-filled focal point. This outdoor space creates an inviting area for relaxation and social interaction. The incorporation of native plantings enhances the courtyard's aesthetics while promoting biodiversity.

The layout of the house is carefully curated to ensure that each living space enjoys unobstructed views of the surroundings. Large, strategically placed windows frame the scenery, allowing natural light to flood the interiors while maintaining a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. The open-plan living areas encourage a sense of community while also providing intimate nooks for quiet reflection.

The orientation of the building maximises passive solar heating and cooling, reducing reliance on artificial heating and cooling systems.
