London’s emerging South Bank, located adjacent to the south bank of The River
Thames, invites innovative housing designs to match its stylish and ever progressing
compelling constituency. The attractions within the area excel in bringing societies
together. Interaction is the key to successfully merging cultures, this being the
fundamental concept to my future living housing design. The design is based on the
exploration of advanced approaches to modular buildings and how their flexibility can
transform an area creating new communities through development. My vision is
seeing communities adapt to their urban environment and how the surroundings
acclimatise to suit the population.
Imminent building space in London is inevitably becoming problematic. With this in
mind the design I propose demonstrations modular formations, acquiring shapes that
interlock, intersect and combine with one another to potentially create expanding
living spaces for the ever-growing communities. The concept tackles the engagement
of internal and external socio-economic diversity by providing the space for both
public and private connectivity. The concepts flexibility promotes physical
interconnectivity and adaptability between the core and its pods. Each pod is selfcontained
as they extend away from the core. The reserved living spaces provide its
consumer with a secluded capacity for private use. I contrast; the open core becomes
the basis for recreational convention.
The sustainability of the design takes into consideration the urban implications and
environmental impact of building in a highly populated and congested area. The
materials used are recycled and lightweight demonstrating environmental awareness,
efficiency and emergence for living needs. The concept uses steel tubes as scaffolding
and cardboard for exterior fortifications. These materials will make the construction
of each unit informal and unperturbed, as all the parts are prefabricated and these
fragments can be assembled by hand tools. The malleability of the design allows it to
coexist as a temporary or permanent construction.
This model has been created with the use of a mixed-used structure that can be easily
assembled and dissembled to meet the needs of its consumer. The building has the
potential to be used as private living space and for public custom. The pods can be
renovated to exhibition spaces, libraries, restaurants and further accommodation. The
building overtime is designed to be contextualised to its location. As the South Bank
area nurtures, my design concept will inescapably intertwine simultaneously, growing
with its community as its community grows with in it.
