MGA Entertainment, one of the world’s largest toy companies, plans to use the old Los Angeles Times printing facility to create a new design headquarters in Chatsworth. The 24-acre site was designed as a continuous sequence of public spaces that each provide a separate function to the entire site as a whole. The idea was to create a succession of events, that leaves the experiencer with several choices along his or her path to make each experience sequentially unique, much like that of a choose your own adventure story. Dividing the spaces and buildings are both man-made and natural elements that combine to provide a pleasurable and unique experience. Included in the program are: a boardwalk, dog park, amphitheater, party deck with pool and clubhouse, retail plaza, transit plaza, MGA plaza, retail paseo, among a multitude of other amenities.
The project includes four ground-up market rate apartment buildings with a total of 660 apartments. Rennovation are currently being made to the existing 255,000 SF manufacturing building. The project was subject to entitlements, zone change, EIR, and design review processes by a number of governing entities. The project is an AIA San Fernando Valley Urban Design Award winner as well as a Multi-Housing News Gold Metal Recipient.
My role in the project was Project Architect. With help from a project manager and a principal, I was the point of contact for design, coordination, documentation & permitting. Phase I is currently under construction - The MGA Headquarters building (pictured left) & Building C.
