My Names is Jundi Chen. You can call me James. I graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture Studies in May 2015, and continued my NAAB certification at University of Southern California for a Master’s Degree in Architecture, which I believe that I’m well prepared to handle the responsibilities for the job position.
At the University of Illinois, the professors focused more on the structure system for the building, which it helped a lot on how to make the building more reasonable, useful and functional. It helped a lot for the graduate studio in University of Southern California, it gives people a clear sense of how and why the building design look like by following the structure scheme. Besides learning knowledge, I have been actively involved in China Student Association (CSA) at the USC for two years by doing the position of treasurer. My responsibilities include giving advice of the club budget to event group, so that they could plan the event more affordable, also need to record the amount of the money spend each time. I also involved with another positon for Kiwanis international for vice president in Philippine department in September 2016. It is an international, coeducational service club that helps to raise money and give food to the person who needs help. It helped me to gain the responsibilities and leadership for running the club well.
The architecture design studio I have completed throughout five years include three capstone project on residential, educational facilities, urban block projects and four programed spacing designs, which challenged and prepared each student for the workload and design skills at architecture firms. As the workload was very heavy per project, it trained me to manage my schedule well ensure each project can be finished on time and in satisfactory. Also, each time there will be a peer pin up to receive feedbacks from different students and professors to stimulate my final design concept. This has developed my logic of design to be able to transform into a practical use and change the living style for the next generation. Other than Architecture courses I have taken the Real Estate Development which allowed me to contribute to my team to design and present cases with a business mindset.
I interned at AECOM and B+H Architects in Shanghai office for three summers. I was assigned to finish case studies and make a cohesive presentation, to assist the architectural drawings with professional drawing software, develop a strong design concept by using sketchup in the pre-design phases, and to set up meetings with client and material suppliers once a week. The experience has prepared me well in understanding the workload and task expectations at architecture firms. On the other hand, I also did the design work with the street brand Anti Social Social Club Asia exclusive series. It was a great experience to do the color selection for clients and communicate with the principal of the brand. It gave me the idea of teamwork.
