This architectural intervention proposes an addition the current historic visual arts department of Central University of Technology. This dissertation investigates how the addition of a contemporary architecture to an existing historical building will act as a mediator to encourage dialogue and urban activation between old and new, as well as the artist and spectator. The new addition responds to the many problems the current historical building on site presents to ensure the successful functioning of the arts department after the intervention. The proposed addition consists of a much needed public gallery; sculpture, ceramic and easel studios; critique spaces and a student lounge to the existing department. This addition aims to create a functional extension which respects the past, but creates a new platform to make the building relevant in its contemporary context. the new gallery addition will make it possible for students to exhibit their work to the public and the res of the campus for the first time.
