The Mouraria Mosque and Archive aims to embody the values of acceptance and assimilation in an increasingly multicultural Lisbon. It confronts the neglect and invisibility of immigrant networks through a distinct yet contextual representation of foreign identity. The mosque caters to current contemplation of the faith while the Moorish Archive displays historic artefacts from religious ancestors that have so significantly contributed to the city’s heritage. The convergence of both sacred and secular functions makes this project a living, breathing part of the wider community rather than an insular house of prayer.
