The University at Buffalo, SUNY—a leading R1 institution and member of the Association of American Universities—welcomes applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Architecture to commence July 1, 2025. This post, which comes at an auspicious stage in the life of the department, is intended to augment its legacy in design and theory in the context of its state-of-the-art facilities housed in newly refurbished historic buildings set in a revitalizing city. The successful candidate will be cognizant of contemporary disciplinary objectives and embrace collaboration in an environment of shared governance, along with innovative leadership and efficient administration of educational, research, and service activities. The appointment will be at the level of associate or full professor with tenure and include the associated teaching, research, and service responsibilities of that rank.

The Department
The Department of Architecture emerged in the context of the late 1960s with the stated mission of providing students with the tools for “remaking the social landscape.” It has since fostered diverse paths of research and creative enterprise rooted in ecology, inclusion, making, computational technologies, and urbanism. With a storied roster of educators past and present that includes Reyner Banham, the department is now home to 32 full-time faculty and 540 students. Core programs offered by the department are the Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture. The Master’s program is organized pedagogically by Graduate Research Groups in Ecological Practices, Inclusive Design, Material Culture, Situated Technologies, and Urban Design.
The School
The School of Architecture and Planning is a part of the University at Buffalo—a flagship of the State University of New York—and is the only graduate school of architecture and planning within the 64-campus SUNY system. The school is composed of the departments of Architecture and Planning, and is a multidisciplinary environment that engages with the complex social and environmental issues of the 21st century. With professional and pre-professional programs in the design and planning fields, we integrate knowledge in the arts, humanities, and STEM disciplines and collaborate to address pressing issues pertaining to the built environment.
