The Technologies and Facilities Manager will support the Department of Architecture and Urban Design's post-graduate professional M.S.AUD program and the IDEAS campus, an off-site graduate research facility located in a 10,000+ square foot studio complex with a Robotics Lab, Fabrication Shop, classrooms, exhibition spaces and offices.

The position will be responsible for the IDEAS facilities and technology lab's daily operations as well as overall administrative, technological, and academic support functions, including long-range planning, training, and instruction, safety coordination, operation, and management. This position will also serve as back-up to the on-campus Perloff Fabrication Shop and Facilities Manager during staff absences.  


  • Working knowledge of multiple releases of Microsoft Windows Operating, Mac OS X, Linux distributions, and their respective TCP/IP communication clients.
  • Working knowledge of design software Rhino, Maya, and Unity.
  • Working knowledge of Precix 3 Axis CNC router, Synrad laser cutter, and Z-Corp rapid prototyping 3D printer, or equivalent equipment.
  • Skill in fabricating architecture models.
  • Knowledge of management and operation of all the tools, machinery, and equipment used for programmatic support. Ability to function in a fabrication shop/robotic lab environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in the management of a large and complex multifunctional physical plant.
  • Ability to analyze situations/systems, identify problems and implement solutions with equanimity and impartiality, particularly during times of stress and/or a non-standard work environment.
  • Ability to advise students on the development and completion of class and extracurricular projects and supervise students and staff to ensure the safe and proper use of equipment, machinery tools, materials, and processes, including student-performed clean-up and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of all materials, chemicals, supplies, equipment, tools, services, and resources necessary for the IDEAS graduate program.
  • Knowledge and ability to maintain, service and repair, or cause to be serviced and repaired by others, the equipment and facilities in the Robot Lab and Fabrication Shop, including knowledge of internet and digital technology, welding, fabrication, construction, plumbing, masonry, electrical crafts, sufficient to repair minor problems and simple installations or to identify and articulate services to be performed by University Facilities Operations or other campus services when determined to be appropriate.
  • Ability to maintain and establish a tool and equipment check-out and retrieval system.
  • Ability to assert authority to maintain safety standards and procedures including a clean and safe working environment, as well as protect against improper use of equipment and facilities.
  • Skill in using basic English and ability to use a desktop computer to track inventories of keys, equipment, and supplies and to generate basic business correspondence, reports, forms, etc.
  • Ability to analyze complex administrative systems and to set short and long-term goals to ensure efficient utilization of scarce resources.
  • Ability to independently analyze, prioritize and delegate work tasks to attain department goals and objectives.
  • Working knowledge of first-aid, including CPR.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds, repeatedly and often as required.
  • Ability to travel to/from UCLA's main campus and the IDEAS campus, and to/from off-campus vendors. Must provide own transportation to off-campus work locations.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to supervise and/or participate in facility planning and space utilization.
  • Working knowledge of State and Building Codes and of State and OHSHA health and safety standards.
  • Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workloads, with frequent interruptions and competing needs from various students, faculty, and staff.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field, or an advanced professional degree in Architecture or a related field.
