The Data Visualization Specialist will be responsible for supporting the analysis of internal and external datasets and the development of clear, compelling data products to inform evidence-based strategies for climate change mitigation, sustainability trends, and parametric design outputs. These data products may include reproducible figures, reports and presentations as well as interactive data visualizations and dashboards to be shared in SOM offices globally.

Under the supervision of the Sustainable Engineering Studio, a successful candidate will collaborate closely with Sustainability specialists and data analysis staff with SOM’s Office of Technology to translate analytical outputs into data products that directly inform design. While this position is not solely responsible for publishing original research, the Data Visualization Analyst will be responsible for developing and maintaining reproducible data workflows that facilitate collaborative analysis with SOM design teams worldwide.

The specific responsibilities and scope of work for this role are evolving. Key responsibilities are likely to include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Updating annual and real time visualizations of firmwide data. 
  • Working with project teams to visualize multi-object parametric optimizations.
  • Synthesis of large and complex external datasets, to support internal analyses, e.g., carbon, energy, and water reduction and projections.
  • Development of clear, compelling data visualization products, including figures, reports and presentations.
  • Development of decision-support tools and products, including dashboards and interactive visualizations.
  • Develop and maintain reproducible data workflows for both external and internal datasets, utilizing open source protocols like GitHub.  
  • Performs large batch analysis of at least one of the following sustainable analysis: energy, daylighting, or solar radiation for building and master planning projects.
  • Remains current on issues related to sustainable and green building design.
  • Develops and works towards sharing visualization findings via an internal sustainability curriculum for the firm as a whole.

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Urban Design or Planning.
  • Be comfortable and knowledgeable of a wide range of reporting and visualization technologies, including Tableau and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience analyzing large data sets using Excel (pivot tables, charts, formulas)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable and green building design and/or construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent research on sustainable strategies for building design, construction and operation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and commitment to work within the integrated design team structure
  • 2-4 years of experience which reflects increasing responsibility in all phases of design/technical architecture and/or engineering.
  • Coursework, certificate, or boot camp in Data Visualization and Analytics preferred.
  • LEED accredited preferred.
  • BEMP accredited preferred.
