RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS ARCHITECT

Experience Required:  5+ years

GAST ARCHITECTS is an established, well-respected, thirteen-person firm in San Francisco’s SOMA district that focuses on both new construction and renovations of custom, high-end residential projects in the Bay Area and beyond.  Our work ranges in scope from the development of large country properties and urban whole house renovations to more modest additions to and remodeling of existing housing in styles from modern to transitional/historic.  We work with our clients to specify interior finishes, fixtures, hardware, and accessories for those who do not use an interior designer, and coordinate with an interior designer if there is one.  For most of our projects, we develop detailed interior elevations and enlarged floor plans, prepare custom millwork and cabinetry details, and lead clients through the selection of stone, marble, tile, wood, etc.  We generally do not specify drapery or furnishings (except in very rare cases).

Our office has a relaxed, professional, and friendly atmosphere.  Design collaboration is at the center of our work—we know that good ideas in the pursuit of quality can come from any team member.  We support our staff by encouraging continuing education, assisting in the pursuit of licensure for those who need it, and providing mentoring opportunities by senior staff.

Role: We are looking for a person with proven residential interiors talent who reads people easily and wins trust through competent work.  The role of Interiors Architect involves working with our principals to develop creative, client-responsive designs.  Responsibilities will include leading clients through alternative design options (space planning, finishes, etc.), development of specifications/schedules/interior elevations/enlarged plans, and coordination with suppliers, contractors, and subs.  For the right person, if the design skills, emotional intelligence, and specifications-savvy mind are present, this position will rapidly grow to leading interiors architecture at Gast Architects.  This position also offers the opportunity to manage projects beyond an exclusive interiors focus.

Required Skills & Experience: Applicants should be able to show the following:

  • Extensive experience in custom residential interiors, both renovations and new, transitional/historic and modern
  • Specifications & detailing knowledge of residential finishes, fixtures, cabinetry, millwork, metalwork, etc.
  • Highly developed skills in 2-D drafting and familiarity with BIM 3-D modeling.  We are an ArchiCAD office and will provide training for those who are unfamiliar.
  • Strong communication abilities: verbal, written and graphic
  • Ability to build trust with clients through social grace, good judgement, and discretion
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a team on several projects and manage junior staff with integrity and a sense of humor
  • Bachelors degree

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • S. F. Bay Area experience: knowledge of local showrooms, suppliers, fabricators, and installers
  • Architectural registration
  • Hand-sketching and computer rendering expertise

Compensation: We offer competitive pay, a superior benefits package, indoor bike storage and shower, and a casual, supportive, non-smoking environment.  Our spacious design studio is located in a recently renovated LEED Gold historic warehouse with a roof deck.

This position is full time.  You must be a U.S. citizen or have a work permit.
