wHY was founded by Kulapat Yantrasast in 2004 and has established itself in the international design vanguard for completing widely-acclaimed projects that serve the arts, communities, and the environment. Our practice is structured as an “Ecology of Disciplines”—four workshops focusing on ideas, buildings, grounds and objects—to approach projects from multiple angles resulting in holistic, sustainable designs. Design Thinking is at the core of our practice and we look for opportunities for innovation in all our projects.

Currently, we are seeking a Senior Architect (20+years) with a strong background in construction contract administration of mid to large scale institutional and cultural projects and working knowledge of advanced building technologies, components and systems. The project sites are in the bay area and will require working with the team in Los Angeles and New York.

Basic Responsibilities:

  • Manage contractor and client relationships and team communication through all phases
  • Lead a large multidisciplinary team, coordinating the work through completion.
  • Conduct meetings and work sessions including large client teams and contractors
  • Interface with building and permitting officials as required. Present the project design or modifications as required for approvals.
  • Lead and participate in the production of architectural contract documents as required, coordinating the workload of all staff members to complete documents on schedule
  • Perform QC/QA and technical reviews, maintain contract documents, including the project manual
  • Perform construction contract administration including on-site observations, mock up reviews; preparing and coordinating bulletins; process submittals, RFIs, pay apps, substitution requests and change order requests.
  • Perform and/or guide project close out duties as required.
  • Resolve complex technical and design issues; perform work requiring independent judgment in evaluation, selection and application of non-standard techniques and procedures
  • Anticipate and plan for any roadblocks for overall project success with thorough understanding of contractual responsibilities, schedule and budget
  • Advocate for design excellence while meeting client and project objectives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed Architect in CA, with Bachelor’s degree in Architecture
  • 20+ years of relevant experience as a project architect (at least 10 in CD through CA phase) including museum projects
  • Proficiency in the preparation, coordination and development of architectural contract documents through all phases on mid-to-large scale, complex projects.
  • Experience resolving complex details for a range of exterior envelope systems, site conditions, building systems and higher types of construction.
  • Broad knowledge of CA codes, regulations and industry/building standards
  • Experience working with various agencies and governmental officials on complex permits with modifications, entitlements and special approvals.
  • Experience with AIA standard contracts and working knowledge of various parties’ responsibilities through all phases.
  • Experience managing multiple aspects of client and project coordination with a large team.  Must have strong communication, organization and relationship management skills, capable to work effectively in a range of roles, depending on the team structure.
  • Experience in both new construction and additions at an institutional scale.
  • Ability to take on projects mid-stream.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, MS Office Suite, including MS Project; and sketching

Additional Preferred Skills and Credentials

  • Experience in LEED certified projects
  • Experience with Exhibit Design, including casework
  • Proficiency in Adobe CS; 3ds max and/or rhino

Position Details & Application Procedures:

This is an independent contractor position. Fee will negotiated commensurate with experience and scope.  Candidate shall be able to work independently with own place of work and equipment in bay area and coordinate with staff from both our Los Angeles and New York office.
