Well-established real-estate organization seeks an experienced senior architect to manage our architecture department. The individual we are in search of is responsible, organized, and self-motivated, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and possesses a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field. You must have:    

Valid NYS architect’s license, as well as strong knowledge of DOB requirements and procedures, excellent computer skills (Photoshop, AutoCAD, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)  

Extensive design, engineering, general management, and experience with interior & architectural projects in a residential & commercial environment  

Ability to function in high-pressure deadline-oriented work environment. Good salary/benefits package.

I.   Summary of the Position:  

The Chief Architect is responsible for overseeing all matters of construction & design as well as any and all other tasks, duties and responsibilities required for the satisfactory fulfillment of the position, in accordance with departmental and management needs.  

II.  General Responsibilities:    

  • Oversees all projects and staff members within the department for the proper execution of design/construction projects.   
  • Serves as a consultant to other departments on all matters of design, construction, code issues, and governmental permitting procedures.
  • Reviews tenants’ proposed plans & specifications to ensure that they serve the Company’s best interests.
  • Prepares and approves NYC Local Law 11 façade projects.
  • Oversees the documentation and compilation of floor plans, floor areas, and Certificates of Occupancy information of the Company’s building portfolio.    

III.  Specific Duties/Responsibilities/Areas of Involvement:     


Specific project or task initiated by Ownership  

Scope of work is developed related to this project or task  

Survey of project location conducted (building; property; etc.)  

As-Built Drawings prepared or obtained (drawings showing existing conditions)  

Once Basic Plan is prepared, this is reviewed with Ownership to obtain feedback, reactions, suggestions, etc.    

Further detailed plans are developed based on feedback, etc.  

When Final Plans are approved by Ownership, permit plans are prepared for filing with NYC DOB  

If necessary, construction documents are also prepared for contractor’s use.  

When project is completed, Chief Architect will review and if all is satisfactory, will sign off on the job with NYC DOB    


Chief Architect serves as internal consultant and advisor to Ownership, as well as other internal personnel on an as-needed basis.  





-Waterproofing (including Local Law 11/98)

-Design Issues (colors; graphics; materials; selection of replacement fixtures, etc.)  

Provide advice and consultation to Ownership during inspection of potential properties being considered for acquisition    


Review tenant’s proposed work plans  

Interface with various corporate partners regarding construction, architectural and related design issues on an as-needed basis  

Maintain collection of master floor plans and certificates of occupancy for all properties in portfolio  

Maintain and update a product library (materials; products; fixtures; suppliers; manufacturers, etc.)  

Develop and maintain design standards for both residential and commercial spaces.  

Management of several staff members, coordinating various tasks for each staff member based on project deadlines & strengths of each individual.  

III.  Measures of Accountability:    

In accordance with the guidelines described above, the Chief Architect will be held accountable for the following expectations:  

  • Plans & executes all construction projects in a timely manner as directed by the President, his partners, and/or officers.
  • Interfaces with Residential and Commercial Departments as a support for construction projects.
  • Uses a high degree of professionalism and business protocol/demeanor in accordance with accepted business practices and company rules, regulations and policies.  

IV.  Hiring Specifications:

  • NYS Architect’s or Engineer’s License required
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Architecture or Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years of related work experience, preferably in the real estate or property management fields.
  • Knowledge of construction technology & the construction industry.
  • Design Skills – the ability to efficiently come up with various layouts with particular sensitivity to residential & commercial rentals
  • Knowledge of building & zoning codes.
  • Knowledge of DOB procedures for the procurement of permits & removal of violations.  
  • Strong computer skills (AutoCAD, Photoshop, 3D Studio, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Acrobat; etc.)
  • Project Management Skills - the ability to oversee & coordinate numerous construction projects simultaneously from start to finish.
  • Personnel Management Skills - the ability to manage and delegate tasks for multiple staff members based on their strengths & background.  
  • Strong communications skills (verbal & written)  
  • Highly developed organizational and prioritization skills  
  • Ability to function effectively in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented work environment.
