Leading international exhibition design firm located in lower Manhattan is looking for a Design Director to join our team of diverse and dedicated creative professionals and oversee the firm’s creative approach to the development of physical and experiential environments. Our practice includes high-profile projects in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. We work in collaborative teams that integrate architecture and physical exhibits with onsite experience, digital media, and online communities. 

The work we do touches tens of millions of lives annually and engages the creation of physical places of community and public experience, along with the digital universe of participation that surrounds them. Our work focuses primarily on issues that engage individual, cultural, and national identities and aspirations, along with a broad spectrum of sustainability, the environment, and human development. The successful candidate will have a proven record in generating powerful concepts and design in globally significant projects, and a driving interest to lead world-class exhibition projects at varying scales with strong, culturally-based interpretive and experiential qualities. Experience in all phases of the exhibition design process, experience managing an engaged team of physical and 2D design professionals, a penchant for working within multidisciplinary collaborative team settings, and an interest in thinking and working out-of-the-box are essential. 

Major Responsibilities 

  • Work strategically with Creative Director and senior creative staff to set key elements of the company’s creative approach to design and form-making 
  • Maintain high standards of design creativity across firm’s work and identity 
  • Maintain personal currency in design, fabrication, exhibition, multimedia, and scientific and social trends relevant to the firm’s work and engage staff in continual professional development and awareness of the field 
  • Mentor design staff with particular focus on direct reports 
  • Oversee general design direction of individual projects, supervising and advising lead designers 
  • Set and regularly review design direction on significant projects as required 
  • Set and/or oversee key design parameters on proposals 
  • Lead designer recruitment process and attend all final interviews; make final designer hiring recommendations to Creative Director for final decision 

Qualifications 

  • A minimum of 10 years senior experience in exhibition- or theme-related design 
  • Very strong conceptual, aesthetic and form-making capabilities as well as technical skills in project development including visitor flow, experiential development, integration of digital and physical elements, architectural integration, and managing a diverse and sizeable team both in New York and in remote (and possibly international) locations 
  • Excellent client relationship skills 
  • Extensive knowledge of fabrication techniques, both analog and digital, as well as the fundamental performance criteria for design documentation 
  • Experience estimating project resource needs for proposals and resourcing 
  • Must also have strong personnel and management skills, capability for directing and mentoring other designers, as well as working effectively and efficiently with creative (content and digital) colleagues to generate strong, one-of-a-kind design 
  • Must have a strong interest in breaking new ground as appropriate to each project, in shaping the field of exhibition, and in personal growth
