The design of the Performance Arts Center aimed to fold the surface of Kennedy Plaza (Downtown Providence) into a continuous sheet with three expanding conical vaults - two indoor theaters and an outdoor stage. Proceeds to the vaults, the sheet ripped open into entries and a patio. The roofscape of receiving vaults and ripped openings invite visitors to gather and interact. The curvilinear geometry and the corresponding mass-timber structure of ribs and braced columns allude to a festival, a temporary presence in the center of the city, like the traveling circus or theatrical companies of past eras.
