Iglesia de La Yaguita

I worked with a non-profit, Journeyman International during my thesis to design a school, church and playground in the Dominican Republic. Humanitarian work is a passion of mine, and gave me direct experience with my client. I visited the site, took soil samples, met with the local structural engineers, a construction manager, and the people of the neighborhood known as La Yaguita. This rests on the outskirts of Santiago.

The playground was a partnership with another non-profit, and was implemented into the site in 2015. It is now the first and only playground serving the children of La Yaguita. The run-down, rudimentary school has now been renovated, and the site for the church (adjacent to the school and shared playground) has begun construction on the church. The construction schedule for this type of project is dependent on the funds raised by the client, and has been phased.

The program of the church contains basic spaces of a sanctuary, community outdoor space, a office, storage and restrooms. Working with the limited local materials was the largest challenge. I hope to visit again once construction progresses.

Photo shown is of the renovated and improved school building (large credit to the structural team).
