Designed for the Veterans Administration to replace an aging facility nearby, the VA Medical Center (VAMC) is located in Louisville, on a 34-acre greenfield site, adjacent to a freeway, in a residential area. Due to the campuses’ adjacency to the surrounding neighborhood minimizing building height, ensuring pleasant views from the neighborhood, and providing acoustic buffers were all priorities.
The VAMC is a teaching and research facility dedicated to providing exceptional care for veterans. The architecture follows a concept of a journey of healing; throughout the project (inside and out) landscaped paths, gardens, and terraces are placed to provide fresh air and places of respite. The buildings use materials familiar to Kentucky veterans such as local limestone, and the fenestration patterns are reminiscent of military ribbons.
