Ghana is a formal colony of the British and is located on the west coast of Africa. It was formally called the gold coast in the colonial days and renamed Ghana after independence in 1957. Ashanti Region is the Second major capital region of Ghana after Greater Accra Region among the ten administrative regions of Ghana. It is also the third largest of the 10 regions. It is ranked the number one producer of “Cocoa” as well as the number two producer of Gold and it’s therefore popularly known as the Gold Coast. With its stable democracy, discovery of oil and its booming economy, it is no fluke that all the three successive United States of America presidents have paid visits to the country. Like other regions in Ghana and other African countries, Ashanti is a land of monarchy composed of a rich culture with the basis of Art in General. It started from a tributary state to a centralized hierarchical kingdom which is ruled by the king of the Ashanti traditionally known as the Asantehene. One of the Most Prominent cultural identity and art piece material is the kente cloth, multicolored woven traditional fabric that enriched with symbolism that reflects the lives of the Ashanti people. Ashanti is the location of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the second public university established in the country in 1952. The university has its roots in the plans of the Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I to establish a university in Kumasi as part of his drive towards modernization of his kingdom. KNUST is the intended site from the development of thesis design project, which is the design of a new School of Architecture Faculty.
DESIGN THESIS STATEMENT:
"Buildings on Campus show the style of international architecture with the use of mainly concrete and glass as materials. there is the absence of expression
of local culture. In order to bring the presence of locality in the context, we have to go back to our roots in the concept of Sankofa. Sankofa is an Adinkra
symbol of the Ashanti which means "going back to pick what we left behind.” Going back in an architectural sense will be the use of local materials, traditional
construction, climate adaptation, symbols and social interaction which are key components of vernacular architecture. This will enable a leading new approach
within the context of international style buildings."
