To create offices for landscape architects Edwina vonGal & Co. in the industrial New York City neighborhood of Long Island City, JCA oversaw the renovation of an existing 3 story warehouse building and the design and construction of a new entry pavilion. The 15,000 s.f., building was stripped to its structural shell and reconfigured into open studios on the lower floors, and a private loft residence for the owner on the top floor.
The project's most prominent feature is the pavilion, which creates much needed reception and waiting space for the owner, and strongly announces the her new presence in this up and coming neighborhood. Its materials, including cement panel siding, galvanized steel decking, and stock aluminum windows, are common to the neighborhood, but are uniquely deployed to give the building a distinctive style.
The pavilion is a light counterpoint to the heavy feel of the existing masonry building. This lightness was achieved by cantilevering the front end of the pavilion far out from a concealed concrete wall, giving the magical impression that it defies gravity by floating four feet above grade.
