November 2014--JacobsWyper Architects' recently completed state-of-the-art SWAT, Bomb, K-9 Facility for the Philadelphia Police Department's tactical response departments uses a cross-platform design to bring together the police units responsible for joint tactical response. The project was awarded LEED® Gold certification by the US Green Building Council, the first such designation for a city-owned project. The facility also won two Project Recognition awards from the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) mid-Atlantic chapter.
The 31,000sqft complex integrates the critical response departments of the Police Department with common training, classroom, locker and break areas. Training programs conducted by these units within the new complex are utilized by over 400 other jurisdictions nationally. JacobsWyper Architects developed a cross-platform approach to increase operational coordination among the different units and raise the standards of response and tactical training. Each unit's location within the complex is designed to optimize links to other existing facilities on the police academy campus: SWAT with firing range facilities; Bomb Disposal with bomb disposal and training range; K-9 with dog exercise and training fields.
This is completely modern facility supports highly professional police units. The design incorporates a range of sustainable aspects that include a large, open gallery for enhanced day light and passive heating that doubles as a lobby and informal meeting space, extensive storm water management filtration and retention, energy efficient lighting, as well as advanced lighting controls and a ground-source/geo-exchange heat pump HVAC system. These features contributed to JacobsWyper Architects earning the facility LEED® Gold certification by the US Green Building Council.
