The average American household uses nearly 320 gallons of clean, potable water each day. 30% of that amount is contributed to outdoor uses such as lawn irrigation. With an EPA estimated average lawn size of 8,700 SF, we each use approximately 48 gallons of clean water a day to irrigate our lawns.
Drum Circle is a pavilion constructed of 108, 55-gallon blue drums, representing the amount of water used to irrigate the average lawn for one summer season. To create the pavilion, individual drums are strapped in groups of three to form a “brick” module and are then stacked and rotated to form an open circle that embraces a social space. The circular drum formation is nestled between four gardens illustrating the size of the average US lawn and planted with flowers and grasses native to the Northeast region. Spaces between the pavilion and planted areas are activated as gathering spaces within the context of the Governor’s Island lawn.
