BORDER/GROUND - The Architecture of the Gaza Strip

Developed in collaboration with the Centre for Research Architecture and Forensic Architecture, ADS7 at the Royal College of Art completed detailed research into the architectural and urban situation in Gaza and, in particular, the reconstruction of the Strip following continual damage. The result of the this research was comprehensive research book and a proposed intervention. This intervention was a low cost, efficient contruction system that offered design freedom even under the strict building material blockade imposed by Israel.

This intervention was detailed in two pamphlets to be disseminated directly in Gaza. The first is a kit for assembling the required drawings for a planning application. The second details the construction system that was designed, allowing for easy quantification and interative design.

The UN (UNOPS and UNWRA) have expressed interest in the project and there are ongoing discussions to conduct a case study in the field. It is also the focus of a contribution to ‘Open Gaza’, a book detailing the architectural and urban nature of the Israeli blockade, currently being published by Terreform in New York City.
