Heia Studio is an emerging architecture and design practice based in Vancouver. Founded by an architect and industrial designer, Heia Studio is multidisciplinary by nature. This combination of perspectives informs their approach, simultaneously considering a project within the context of a city or a neighbourhood, through to the impressions formed by individual interactions with a space.
"We design with intent. We design spaces with attention to how they are experienced, informed by observations of the physical world and human behavior."
Though Heia Studio was established in 2019, it has been many years in the making. Colin Clark and Jenna Hill met in 1999 while studying fine art. Post art school they spent two years living and working in Japan, and returned to Canada to study design and architecture independently. This shared background influences how they conceptualize their work, this evident in their sensitivity to the unique character of individual materials.
They began their official design collaboration in 2015 when they completed a new 10,000 sq. ft. headquarters for Canadian fashion retailer Oak + Fort. The official launch for Heia Studio in late 2019, coincided with the completion of a new headquarters for HAVEN, a premium streetwear brand based in Vancouver.
Hill brings experience in commercial workplace and retail interiors, as well as furniture design and design strategy. Clark has worked at some of Canada's most well-known architectural firms (Bing Thom Architects, Acton Ostry Architects) and has design and project experience across education, hospitality, and residential sectors. He is a registered architect with the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC).
