John Hakim is a productive, confident and imaginative architectural designer seeking to study/work in an environment that pushes his current confines in design and dares him to explore his creative thinking and application of concepts. He is inspired by the mindfulness that architecture is the vehicle that carries sustainability and that sustainability is the engine that drives architecture.
He graduated from The Faculty of the Built Environment (Fobe) Uganda Martyrs University – Nkozi with a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design. He travelled to Juba - South Sudan in 2012 where he slotted-into the construction setting, working with local contractors on humanitarian, residential and commercial projects in Juba, Yei and Lainya – South Sudan.
Working in a newly created country, has its ups and naps. The dream of practicing architecture in the conventional sense (in an architecture firm) remained a shadow to what the prevailing building process entails. It is a time-consuming expedition via an unusual route. Much of his input and learning in this rare course revolved around the building process and the interaction with the players of the building team. His understanding of the built environment design process, sustainability, presentation of architectural drawings meant he had a niche within the construction process.
In 2015, he took a special turn to partially work in a carpentry workshop besides the construction commitments. He designed furniture and metal works. These experiences would afford him unique insights to enhance his creative thinking and perception of the design and construction process.
The unique setting, he practices in sharpened his aptitude in planning, creative design, problem solving, communication skills; ability to work with clients and consultants with attention to detail; having the awareness of every projects’ functional, environmental and social context.
He’s currently looking out for a new position – to study and or work. Moving out of the current practice environment is high on his goals.
