Gluckman Tang worked with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego to expand its Downtown campus by creating new exhibition spaces in the Baggage Building of the historic Santa Fe Depot and by adding a new, adjacent three-story structure on the site of the former Railway Express Agency Building.
The new 13,750-square-foot addition is a contemporary, contextual response to the surrounding historic structures, while the 13,680-square-foot former Baggage Building was converted into a Kunsthalle-type exhibition venue.
The new facilities will complement the curatorial programs of the museum's primary site in La Jolla, while expanding and connecting with the museum’s existing downtown venue across the street. The Depot continues to function as a transportation hub with ongoing active use by local and regional railways, as well as by Amtrak.
