Interboro Partners, in collaboration with the Bronx River Alliance and artist Richard A. Chance, unveiled a new mural Concrete Connection in the South Bronx on October 14, 2020. In July, Interboro Partners asked community members of the Southern Boulevard neighborhood engaging in park activities to share their photos as part of a series of large-scale portraits. Illustrated by the artist Richard A. Chance, Concrete Connection features these portraits of the residents reenacting their favorite park activities from their homes.
The mural is featured prominently at the intersection of Westchester and Whitlock Avenues, where previously, a drab steel and concrete wall lined the route to a hard-to-find entrance to Concrete Plant Park and the Bronx River. Concrete Connection covers the wall with 28 connected panels and 29 portraits of residents—a bold statement that brings attention to the great parks and riverfront of the South Bronx. A variety of activities from biking, birding,BBQing, and everything else the community likes to do in the park is shown as a reminder to passersby that outdoor fun is all available just around the corner.
