"MY BRIEF STORY"
Born into a happy, but creatively-mundane existence in the suburban outskirts of Houston, Texas, Garrick Houston managed, at an early age, to discover his gift for visually reproducing the world around him - through illustration. his friends, his family, and other objects and surroundings served as the muses for the sketches of his youth.
In his teenage years, the alluring aspects of creating music would shift his attention away from the pastime he came to enjoy so much, but he would soon rediscover it through the prism of his new passion - Architecture. In college, the formation of stones producing series’ of archways in Gothic cathedrals, to the unintentionally repetitive patterns in the steel and glass construction of modern architecture, would serve as his new muses. these formative years, set against the remote landscape of western Texas, acted as his creative renaissance, taking him to places he had never been (Miami, Brazil, Portugal, Sweden and beyond) and imaging ideas that he had never thought of.
By some means after college, he found himself relocated to the eastern coast of the United States, in the manicured setting of Washington, D.C. having much affection for that great American city, he felt creatively stagnant and wanting more for his talents in architecture and design. brooklyn and the whole of New York City, with its’ dynamic energy would be that creative inspiration he was seeking, for both living and practicing. Today, Garrick is in the process of transforming into a progressive, problem-solving architect/designer. He possesses a deep appreciation for design rooted in: simplicity, responsibility, functionality, and imagination. Though his surroundings have constantly changed, he finds daily inspiration in the people, places, and objects of his time. He also gains design motivation through other related design fields, including: animation, furniture, product, sculpture, and web.
