London Organic Skyscraper

This was a competition sponsored by SuperSkyscrapers.com in Winter/Spring 2014. The thesis was to explore ways in which a skyscraper could be made to expand vertically and add floors as economic conditions required.

Our design approach was to employ prefabricated modular systems arranged in vertical "neighborhoods" with smaller floor plates, with each 4-story neighborhood being separated by a larger floor plate that served as areas for interaction among employees from different departments.

The building twists as it ascends as a way to reduce the wind loads on the building and to give it visual interest. The twist continues as new floors are added and the building climbs higher, up to 1200 feet.

The building's location adjacent to Overground Tube tracks and across the street from the Shoreditch High Street station allows a second floor lobby for mass transit commuters to enter the building across a bridge from the station platform directly into the building. As the grade level lobby is smaller than a conventional building of this size, the second floor mass transit lobby reduces the grade level congestion that would otherwise occur. This smaller grade entry also allows a significant area of the site to be returned to the public as green space.
