Horseshoe Farm Homes

Project Horseshoe Farm is a non-profit community health organization providing support to people in rural west Alabama. One initiative of the program is enhanced independent living, which works to provide homes for local women affected by mental illness, homelessness, and those in need of affordable family-style living environments. As a thesis student at Rural Studio, my team was tasked with designing and building three small, more independent homes for this program, the first to be designed intentionally for their need. Influenced by the physical, mental, social, and emotional needs of the user group, the project includes three single-occupant dwelling units, each with a kitchenette, bathroom, living space, and back porch. The building also includes a laundry room, covered walkway, and communal porch under the same roof. It is the first phase completed of the master plan, and provides a clear means of extension for the second phase, which will include two additional units and a common room.
