Castle Resort

Castle Reosrt | Castle of Roccamandolfi, Italy
Undoubtedly the ruins of the castle Roccamandolfi are the most significant artefact in the intervention area. There were a few questions that we asked ourselves during the process of designing the castle resort:
How to connect the new building with the context of the place?
How to complete the silhouette of the medieval castle?
How to preserve the existing architectural heritage?
How to represent the history of the place?
How to upgrade the living environment?
How to enrich the place through the program of the building?
The inspiration for the new building comes from the castle itself. We relied on something sure- on the castle’s plan, namely that it is designed to fit perfectly in the rocky hill and to have a fabulous view. Thus the new resort became a continuation of the Roccamandolfi plan and gave a new silhouette to the medieval fortress. A small part of the new building is in contact with the outside walls of the castle while most of the resort is at a distance from them. In the empty space between them we use the metaphor about time and the missing part of the castle. The city nearby- the narrow streets and their steps are inspiration for the outside spaces of the resort.
The program of the resort consists of the following functional units- ten guestrooms, a place for nutrition, cafe, administration, spaces for recreation and health, a place for presenting the castle history. There are created possibilities for practicing two extreme sports- mountain bike and horse-riding. A place in the castle is designed to preserve the bicycles, while at the foot of the castle horses are bred.
The building is entirely constructed of wood and glass- plywood, teak and windows without divisors. A double-skin façade is used- in this case the thick wood sliding parts are on the inside as through them it will be possible to regulate building climate for the whole resort and for each room individually.
The ancient stone walls as a background, the slight curves of the building resembling the road that crosses the area, the many steps that connect separate spaces reminding of the town Roccamandolf, all of these things made us approach poetically to the design of the castle resort.
