The Spoorzone project office has assigned a team consisting of Mecanoo and engineering consultancy Movares to redevelop Ede train station and its immediate surroundings. Together the City of Ede, Dutch national railway infrastructure organisation ProRail, and principal passenger railway operator NS are eager to transform the area into a showpiece for the city and the Veluwe area.
Redeveloping Veluwse Poort
The city of Ede is currently redeveloping the Veluwse Poort, the eastern part of the city. The train station area acts as an important link in the chain between the city and the Veluwe National Park, and therefore needs to fit both the urban context and the surrounding landscape appropriately. With bold architecture and optimal integration of utility buildings, public space, railway infrastructure and other modes of transport, the station will become a vibrant centre for the Veluwse Poort. The vision presented by Mecanoo and Movares has proved the most successful during the tendering stage.
Recognisability
Mecanoo and Movares’ transport hub will act as a landmark for the region. The vision of the design is defined by an unobtrusive appearance; the natural environment serves as a starting point for the characteristic materialization that connects the buildings and the station square, emphasising the area’s built identity.
The open wooden canopy of the station allows for soft light to come in and offers remarkable views of the Mauritskazerne and surrounding landscape. Because of the concentration of mobility flows, transfer times between different modes of transportation will be short. Besides being sustainable, the transparent design and wide station passageway will provide an environment that is secure.
