The Boston Society for Architecture (BSA) is pleased to announce the winners of the following 2020 BSA Design Awards:
Campus Planning and Urban Design; Healthcare Facilities Design; Honor Awards for Design Excellence, juried by AIA Atlanta; Interior Architecture and Design; K-12 Education Facilities Design; Residential Design, hosted in partnership with AIA New York; Sustainable Design; Unbuilt Architecture and Design; the Harleston Parker Medal; and the People’s Choice Award, selected from the Harleston Parker Medal finalists.
Other awards and honors, given to individuals by their peers, included the BSA Award of Honor, the BSA Commonwealth Award, the BSA Earl R. Flansburgh Award, and BSA Honorary Membership.
The winners were revealed at the BSA Awards Gala (Gala) on January 21, during a virtual ceremony.

Of all the Design Awards, the Harleston Parker Medal is the most prestigious, annually recognizing the most beautiful new building or structure in Greater Boston. For 2020, there were five finalists, one of which won the People’s Choice Award, determined by popular vote, and one of which won the Harleston Parker Medal, determined by an expert jury.

Of this honor, Jonathan Levi FAIA has remarked, “My deepest thanks to the BSA for this great honor and to all the many collaborators, both lay and professional, who helped bring the Dearborn STEM Academy from aspiration to reality. Special thanks go to Mayor Marty Walsh and to the City of Boston for their indefatigable commitment to the future of this community and its youth as demonstrated by this project."
In addition to recognizing excellent projects, the BSA Awards Gala celebrated a group of remarkable people for their contributions to the BSA community and the building and design professions.

BSA Award of Honor
Jonathan Levi FAIA, 2020 BSA Award of Honor recipient
Jonathan Levi FAIA is an eloquent and vital voice in architecture—a practitioner, teacher, and mentor for more than 40 years. He received a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Art from Yale University. In 1985, he founded Jonathan Levi Architects in Boston. Mr. Levi’s work reflects his deep dedication to extending the legacy of socially progressive modern architecture. His practice centers around highly refined projects, featuring widely applicable innovations in design and technology, improving the quality of life and productivity. A champion of the profession, Mr. Levi has mastered the ability, through co-creation, to gain clients’ and constituency groups’ trust to achieve their highest aspirations for the future while developing the tectonic principles he’s dedicated to teaching and developing in his practice. His portfolio includes many prominent and award-winning designs, including Dearborn High School, a community-transforming public STEM academy for the City of Boston, and the winner the 2020 Harleston Parker Medal. Mr. Levi is a former Adjunct Full Professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Additionally, he has guest taught and lectured internationally and is a frequently published author and sought-after expert.

Patricia Gruits, 2020 Earl R. Flansburgh Young Designers Awards recipient
Patricia Gruits is a Senior Principal with MASS Design Group leading both design and research projects in health, education, and equity. Since joining MASS in 2013, she has led the design of the Maternity Waiting Village in Malawi with the Malawi Ministry of Health, the African Leadership University, a series of primary schools in East Africa with the African Wildlife Foundation and the MSquared Foundation, and the development the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
BSA's Commonwealth Award
David Carlson AIA, 2020 BSA Commonwealth Award recipient
David Carlson has left a mark on the City of Boston. He recently retired after 35 years at the Boston Planning Development Agency, completing his tenure there as Deputy Director for Urban Design. David was the longtime Executive Director of the Boston Civic Design Commission, and was key in cementing the B.C.D.C’s role as part of the review process. David has helped steward and review countless Article 80 projects, including such iconic projects as One Dalton, the Prudential Center, and the collections of buildings in the Charlestown Navy Yard and Fan Pier.

Malia Lazu, 2020 BSA Honorary Membership recipient
Malia Lazu, an award winning, tenured strategist in diversity & inclusion has sparked deep economic development and investment in urban entrepreneurship for over twenty years. In her most recent role as EVP and Regional President at Berkshire Bank, Malia worked to generate wealth for communities by expanding access to capital and spurring economic growth —especially in communities of color that have traditionally been left behind.
Peter Cheever, 2020 BSA Honorary Membership recipient
Peter Cheever’s long-term leadership at LeMessurier has shaped much of our built environment and the way our industry works. His roles in infrastructure as well as architecture projects have made possible major moments in our city: TD Garden, the Central Artery Project, the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and many others. Perhaps even more important than the finished projects, Peter has been a partner to many of us. The industry is fortunate for his investments in collaboration and in our community.

Each year the BSA, often in collaboration with other organizations, sponsors award programs to honor design excellence in Massachusetts, throughout New England, and elsewhere. Awards Definition
Honor Awards: the highest awards. These projects are the “best of the best.” Each one elevated the hearts and minds of our juries by expressing both technical and aesthetic design excellence.
Awards: admirable and innovative work that is successfully executed from concept through construction.
Citations: those projects that caught the jury’s eye for design, technical, humanitarian, or other reasons.
Harleston Parker Medal
The Harleston Parker Medal award was established in 1921 by J. Harleston Parker in memory of his father. The first award was granted by the BSA in 1923. The intent of the award is to acknowledge the “single most beautiful building or other structure” built in the metropolitan Boson area in the past 10 years. The award is co-sponsored by the City of Boston.
People’s Choice Award
An online competition organized by the BSA where members of the public go head-to-head with the Harleston Parker Medal jury to decide which among this year’s finalists is the most beautiful new building in the Boston.
BSA Award of Honor
This honor is given to individuals whose lifetime contributions to the profession and to the BSA have been uncommonly profound.
Earl R. Flansburgh Young Architects Award
This award recognizes design excellence by an architect under 40. The award is named for Earl R. Flansburgh FAIA, a distinguished Boston architect who generously supported emerging professionals and advocated for women architects. This award is co-sponsored by the Flansburgh Family.
BSA Commonwealth Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding influence on Boston’s built environment or the community’s awareness of it.
BSA Honorary Membership
The purpose of this award is to honor an individual whose contributions to the Boston design community are of outstanding significance and value.
