Tomorrow’s Workplace – an office of the future concept – and the UNM Collaborative Teaching and Learning Building (CTLB), both designed by Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, received AIA New Mexico design awards.

Tomorrow’s Workplace, which earned Dekker/Perich/Sabatini an Honor Award, repurposes a 1980s office building to incorporate office, retail, restaurant and multi-family housing. The AIA New Mexico jury cited the multi-story walking path, technological innovations, and the co-work space that encourages business collaboration and work-at-home options as significant components of the “imaginative restructuring of a 1980s office building”. The design represents a sustainable solution to transforming existing office inventory into healthy, functional 21st century environments.

UNM CTLB, which opened on the University’s main campus in 2013, won a Citation of Merit and the Student Jury Honor Award. The building reimagines the traditional classroom and incorporates a technology-rich SCALE-UP classroom for 126 students.

“CTLB takes the sage off the stage, and rather than lecture, teachers assist small student groups in project-based learning,” said Dan Kemme, Principal at Dekker/Perich/Sabatini. “We designed CTLB with UNM faculty who are instrumental in making these types of learning studios successful.”

AIA New Mexico’s biennial award program recognizes distinguished architectural achievement in the state and serves to increase public awareness of the architect’s role in shaping the quality of the built environment.
