New York, May 1, 2012 - Wilf Hall, the newly completed New York University Law building, has recently been awarded a LEED Platinum for New Construction (NC) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, announced Kinetix LLC, the project Sustainable Design and LEED consultant.

Located just off Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, Wilf Hall houses several NYU Law centers and institutes as well as the famed Provincetown Playhouse. Kinetix [business ecology] worked closely with Morris Adjmi Architects (MA) to develop the sustainability strategies and LEED documentation required to submit the building for LEED Platinum certification, the highest level awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.

More than 50 percent of Wilf Hall's footprint is covered by a green roof that has been planted with local species of grasses and ferns, creating new habitats for local birds and insects, reducing heat island effect and regulating the building's temperature, thereby reducing energy use. The green roof also helps filter pollutants from rainwater and reduces runoff into the city's sewers by naturally absorbing it back into the soil. There are also terraces on the second and sixth floor that feature walking paths enclosed by creeping perennials and grasses.

The building's energy cost savings is 44 percent above the baseline industry standard. Its energy envelope design prevents air leakage and reduces heat loss compared to conventional buildings, leading to reduced heating and cooling bills. Additionally, 70 percent of the energy used in the building is offset by renewable sources such as wind, hydro and biomass through purchased green power certificates.
A number of additional environmental attributes were also incorporated into the construction of Wilf Hall, with more than 96 percent of construction and demolition waste diverted from landfill and the use of recycled materials. In addition, all wood products used on the project were harvested in accordance with the Forestry Stewardship Council.

”Kinetix was founded in 2001 with a singular focus – providing best in class sustainability solutions for our clients” notes Michael Block, founder and principal. "We have worked on over twenty-five sustainable design and LEED projects, many at the Gold and Platinum certification levels, but this is an especially important achievement.”
Michael goes on to compliment the great work that MA and NYU did to “design a building that honors the historic aesthetic of the neighborhood and incorporates sustainable technologies of the future.”
