The Lighting Practice’s dedication to learning and design excellence is part of its core values.  The firm encourages its team members to continue to learn and achieve accreditations that enhance the firm’s expertise and knowledge base and enable it to provide the best solutions for its clients. TLP is proud to announce that Ryan Conover obtained his Evidence-Based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) from The Center for Health Design.

Evidence-based design (EBD) is “the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes,” according to The Center for Health Design. Utilizing the eight steps of the EBD process helps designers find research-based solutions that are likely to achieve a client’s goals.

A large body of evidence attests to the fact that the built environment impacts patient stress, patient and caregiver safety, staff effectiveness and the quality of care in healthcare settings.

“The idea that lighting can improve the well-being of staff, patients, and their families is one of the main reasons I’m drawn to designing for the healthcare environment,” Ryan said. “With the EDAC certification, I’m hoping to make more informed, research-based design decisions that strengthen our work and improve outcomes for users. I’m also striving to create new, credible research through post-occupancy studies of our designs, which will add to the EBD knowledge base and support our future projects.”

The EDAC program gives industry professionals the opportunity to be proficient in the evidence-based design process. The exam tests participants on their understanding of and ability to apply the EBD process. The exam’s five sections include healthcare, research, pre-design, construction, and occupancy. Upon passing the exam, certified individuals maintain EDAC certification by completing six hours of approved continuing education units in evidence-based design every two years.

“Lighting is one of several evidence-based design features that has shown desirable effects on outcomes in healthcare settings,” said Helen Diemer, President of The Lighting Practice. “With Ryan’s expertise and EDAC certification, we are excited to be able to partner with our clients to improve outcomes in their facilities and to play a part in advancing the study and research of lighting’s positive impact in healthcare environments.”

Ryan joined The Lighting Practice in 2011 and was promoted to Project Manager in 2015. Prior to joining TLP, he worked as an electrical contractor and gained hands-on experience that helps him with construction documentation. Ryan has completed a variety of project types, including healthcare, education, historic, retail, transportation, landscape, and places of worship.
