Hartford, Conn. – July 5, 2017 – The University of Connecticut began construction on a new, state-of-the-art recreation center that will serve both students and faculty. JCJ Architecture partnered with the firm of Moody Nolan on planning and design for the 200,000 square-foot, $100 million facility.

The Student Recreation Center will host basketball, racquetball and multi-activity courts, cardiovascular and strength training areas and multiple fitness studios. The space will also feature an aquatics center with two swimming pools, a climbing center, running track, and meeting and support areas for intramural and club sports. An Outdoor Pursuits Center will serve as a space for students to gather outdoor instructional experiences and engage in teambuilding exercises.

The building is the one of several University of Connecticut projects JCJ has designed. Additional projects include the university’s Burton Family Football Complex and Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, select renovations to Gampel Pavilion and design for the 97,000 square foot downtown Waterbury campus.

“We envision this center as a place where students want to spend their time and develop healthier habits that extend far beyond their college years,” said James E. LaPosta, FAIA and Chief Architectural Officer at JCJ Architecture. “The dynamic collaboration with the university enabled us to create a building that will be a popular destination for students - embodying the modern health and wellness design trends they’ve come to expect from top-tier universities.”

The recreation facility comes on the heels of other significant athletic and recreation centers JCJ Architecture designed for leading institutions such as University of Massachusetts-Amherst, State University of New York - Fredonia and San Diego State University.

University of Connecticut’s Student Recreation Center will be located at the university’s main Storrs campus and is expected to open in the summer of 2019.
