MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (January 16, 2012) – John Dwyer Architect announces a new line of tables, benches and sideboards made entirely of local materials and finishes..

GRAIN is constructed of Liriodendron, otherwise known as yellow poplar or the tulip tree.  The tree grows remarkably straight and tall, making it dimensionally stable even in long lengths.  It is also a rapidly renewable, fast growing tree giving it a dynamic grain structure ranging from white to deep purple with strong contrasts from sapwood to heartwood.

The design is inspired by the wood itself, its unique grain and its interaction with varying finishes. Their geometry was conceived not as a style or form, but as a series of haptic surfaces that celebrate the grain and finish.

Every aspect of GRAIN is local. The trees are planted, forested and milled in Northern Minnesota.  The finishes, dyes, stains and top coats are mixed and manufactured Minneapolis and western Wisconsin.  Fabrication, assembly and finishing are all performed in house at the shop.

Each piece of GRAIN is made to order, to a specific size and finish, and individually priced by the cubic inch. Custom sizes and color matched enamel finishes are available with no additional fees.  Order confirmation, progress checks, quality assurance review, crating, and delivery tracking are included. The result is what we think of as a service-product, combining the quality of a manufactured product with the customization and communication of a service.

Grain is currently available to the design trades in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota through the Blended Blue showroom in suite 364 at International Market Square in Minneapolis.  Lead times range from 4-7 weeks.
