RICHMOND, VA (November 8, 2013) – With an approach to design that is both forward-thinking and historically sensitive, Baskervill Principal Burt Pinnock’s history of public and professional service will be celebrated tonight as he is honored with the Virginia Society AIA’s Award for Distinguished Achievement.

The award, which celebrates significant achievements by architects in design, practice, education, and service as a citizen architect, will be presented at the Visions for Architecture gala at the historic Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond.

Pinnock’s work is rooted in the belief that architecture can provide not only solutions to cultural challenges but true social change in our communities. His award-winning portfolio includes a variety of masterplanning, commercial, residential, and adaptive reuse work for clients such as the City of Richmond, Slave Trail Commission, Capital One, Virginia Tech, and the Black History Museum.

Pinnock is also the recipient of the Northern Virginia AIA Young Architects Award (1994), the AIA Virginia Society Prize Commendation (1987), and a winner, with Terry Ammons, of the Building Better Communities Competition (1993) for the restructuring of an underdeveloped area of Richmond’s Manchester neighborhood. His design for the National Peace Garden Competition in Washington, D.C., completed with Frank Lorino, was a selected entry (1993); his submission for the City of Richmond’s Public Arts Commission’s Main Street Station Plaza competition, completed with Chris Chase and Camden Whitehead, was a selected finalist (2000).

Educated in architecture at Virginia Tech, Burt began his career at Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer and Associates in New York before stints at Il Laboratorio SNC in Rome, Berngeer Quaglia Architetti in Lugano, Switzerland, and the famed Santiago Calatrava in Paris. Upon his return to the States, Burt began a seven-year tenure at Baskervill in Richmond, where he currently serves as Principal, before cofounding his own firm. BAM and Baskervill merged in July 2013.

Pinnock has become a powerful voice for creative, compelling, and responsible design in Richmond’s urban landscape, serving for periods on the City of Richmond’s Urban Design Committee, Commission for Architectural Review, 1708 Gallery’s Board of Directors, the Richmond Renaissance Advisory Committee, and Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity’s Construction Advisory Committee.

Seeing opportunity to strengthen the relationship between design and Richmond’s communities, Burt cofounded Storefront for Community Design, a nonprofit community building and design resource. He is also an active Venture Richmond Board Member, a City of Richmond Zoning Board of Appeals member, and a Historic Richmond Foundation Advisory Board member.

Pinnock’s passion for the built environment has created award-winning work, meaningful community impact, and a thriving career forged with vision, strong relationships, and a desire to lead.
