Detroit, MI
With great pleasure, we announce that Andrew Stone, AIA, NCARB, has been recognized by Crain’s Detroit as a Notable LGBTQ Leader in Business. This award comes on the heels of his election to the Albert Kahn Associates’ Board of Directors, making Andrew the youngest elected member since the firm’s start in 1895.
“I hope this recognition helps to increase LGBTQ+ visibility within the AEC industry and highlight diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the design community,” said Andrew. “Coupled with my position on the Board at Kahn, this recognition motivates me to continue the incredible legacy of Albert Kahn Associates - and add to the legacy by designing spaces that celebrate individual expression and representation. I would be remiss not to thank my family, friends, and colleagues for their support and encouragement that led me to where I am today.”
Andrew joined Albert Kahn Associates as an architectural intern in 2014. With each opportunity, he demonstrated talent and leadership, leading him to become a senior associate and corporate director. He is a trusted resource for clients and his fellow team members.
Andrew is the lead architect on a proposed 5.7 million sq.ft. industrial project overseas. He has played a pivotal role in building design, construction documentation, and construction administration for a $140
million new construction office building for Erie Insurance and a 200,000 sq.ft. renovation for the same client, a significant renovation and expansion for Oakland University, and a 2 million sq.ft. manufacturing campus for Volvo Cars, completed in just two years.
He is also an inaugural member of Kahn’s Diversity + Inclusion Committee, which contributes to the strategic planning for the firm. Andrew and the group conducted a company-wide survey to establish an action plan with targeted areas for improvement. This information will inform the entire firm and help shape new policies and goals to make Kahn a more inclusive and diverse firm.
Outside of Kahn, Andrew has volunteered with Gleaner’s Community Food Bank to feed those in need, the Southeast Michigan chapter of MENSA to introduce children to the architectural design process, and numerous other community groups within Southeast Michigan. He remains active in the AIA and NCARB
networks, always seeking opportunities to learn and mentor fellow members.
His creativity permeates every aspect of the projects he leads, helping to provide solutions that are resourceful, unique, and responsive to specific conditions and challenges. Andrew’s attention to detail, drive, and eagerness to go the extra mile have led him to become a leader at Kahn.
