Wyeth Architects’ latest project, 6 Maple Street, has been selected for a Merit Award in the category of Renovations, Adaptive Re-Use or Retro-Fit (Built) in the 2023 AIA Connecticut Sustainable Architecture Award Program.

Located in Chester, Connecticut, The 1749 center chimney colonial building was given a deep energy retrofit, and now comes close to meeting Passive House energy standards. Currently, the upper floors serve as Wyeth Architects’ office and the street level floor houses the Acoustic Music guitar shop.

The Sustainable Architecture awards program recognizes the efforts of Connecticut architects who have developed and demonstrated ways to decrease Green House Gasses, reduce energy use and demand, conserve water use, and create durable, comfortable, and healthy spaces. The award is meant to raise public awareness of the climate crisis and the massive role played by construction, maintenance, and operations of the built environment. This award also honors the climate change initiatives of AIA Connecticut and Connecticut Passive House to secure a more sustainable and environmentally thriving future.

The jury consisted of Efrie Escott, Sustainability Transformation Leader at Schneider Electric, Katie MacDonald, AIA, NCARB Architect, co-founder of After Architecture, LLC, and Jacob Deva Racusin, Director of Building Science and Sustainability at New Frameworks. The jurors praised the “great commitment to durability, moisture management, and historic preservation of an existing building while achieving solid energy improvements.” They also noted how the “design choices express the ethos of the project,” including the façade and roof arch.

Last year, Wyeth Architects was recognized with a Sustainable Architecture Award of Merit for their work on the Legacy Theatre in Branford, Connecticut.
