20.10.20: Making Peace between the Police and People

Ministry of Architecture invites the general public especially the youth, women, activists, nation builders and concerned citizens to register for this virtual public charrette holding on 20th October 2021 from 12noon - 5pm (WAT). The full statement is as follows:

Since the hugely popular anti-police brutality/EndSARS protests and the gory scenes of 20.10.20, the relationship between the Police and the people and by extension the State and the Nation has remained at an all-time low.

Just on 25th May 2021, unknown gunmen razed a Police station in Iwollo Oghe, Ezeagu local government area of Enugu, one month after a similar attack on Adani Police station in the same state; killing four policemen in a trend reminiscent of the litany of attacks that brought the extremist Boko Haram group into global consciousness more than a decade ago. The 1960 vision of a peaceful country has become very blurry. How can we make a peace deal between these warring factions?

We think, if peacemaking etymologically means the act of making peace, can we assume peace is an object ? What objects can we make as a peace offering between the police and the people. Can we, for example, look to Henry Ford’s global vision, with consumerism as the key to peace.

Serendipitously, cars/automobiles like Ford himself modelled, could be at the center of this peace offering considering how normal it is to find impounded vehicles littering typical police formations across the country.

Can the architectural objects such as a police station be less forbidding, welcoming citizens to park at police’s risk, thereby reworking the infamous ‘Cars parked at owner’s risk into ‘Cars parked at Police’s Risk. Can this model jumpstart a win-win strategy for  citizens’ healing on one hand and a revenue boost for the Police ? Can we start with a remodelling of the burnt station in Iwollo Oghe and Adani into half a Car Park and half a Police Station ?
