Sheldon Johnson Receives Scholarship and Paid Internship

Dallas, TX (April 7, 2023) E4H Environments for Health Architecture is pleased to announce Sheldon Johnson as the recipient of the 2023 4wrd Diversity in Design Scholarship. Johnson will graduate in December 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Clemson University. He is co-president of the Clemson student branch of the National Organization of Minority Architects (CNOMAS) where he helped organize an award-winning conference discussing African American erasure in the field of architecture. In this role, Johnson also helped organize a K-12 learning event for architecture and helped start a podcast that addresses current issues in the industry. He was instrumental in securing a grant to fund a statue honoring Harvey Gantt. Gantt was the first African American to be accepted at Clemson University and studied architecture. Johnson continues to facilitate the design and implementation of the statue, bridging Clemson and the local community.

“Sheldon will be an excellent addition to our Dallas team,” said Jim Johnson, AIA, LSSGB, President. “His enthusiasm for architecture and passion to further Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in our industry is what we need for the next generation. We look forward to having his voice alongside ours.”

"I pursue architecture because it has the potential to be the most community-engaging career needed in society," said Sheldon, "How we design is directly correlated to how we engage with the communities we design for. To fully take oneself out of the end goal so that a true community can form is what will naturally bring and improve diversity in the field I love."

With a commitment to supporting diversity and academic excellence, E4H works to improve diversity in the field of healthcare and health sciences architecture. E4H’s goal is to promote architecture and design candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and celebrate their unique perspectives. The 4wrd Diversity in Design Scholarship is awarded to a candidate that furthers this initiative and provides a $10,000 grant and paid internship.

E4H is committed to enhancing community health and wellness, bolstering innovative research initiatives, and continuing its mission of designing for the future of healthcare and health science + technology.
