The Weber Studio believes that there are a few development projects that succeed without the combination of good architecture and involved ownership – an involvement that will only occur if the design process is a positive and enjoyable one. The Weber Studio’s design professionals, who specialize in high-end residential architecture, recognize that what is a familiar process to an architect is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a client.
Whether designing a principal residence or a vacation home, The Weber Studio’s staff feels that it is important to avoid client frustration. Moreover, their goal is to increase client participation by translating the language of architecture into a language that non-design professionals can understand.
The firm is immensely proud of the contributions its work has made to the communities where its projects are located. The designers appreciate the positive feedback they receive from the families who inhabit their designs. The firm concentrates on the residential sector. This affords the architects the opportunity to exercise their creativity and work with clients who are intimately invested in the projects as they are.
Thomas Weber, AIA is the principal and founder architect of The Weber Studio. Weber’s background and experience in furniture design and construction, as well as hands-on building and historic preservation is reflected in his designs and work ethic. He has an appreciation for balance and rhythm, an enthusiasm for architecture, and typically participates in all facets of a project.
Weber is a familiar sight on projects – sleeves rolled up, pen and paper in hand, explaining and demonstrating to owners and builders how issues can be efficiently and completely addressed. He believes his team’s dedication to the entire architectural process – from the idea’s conception to its realization – is essential to a projects success, as is a commitment to high levels of personal service.
Senior architect Becky Fromm, AIA joined the firm shortly after its inception. An integral part of the team, Fromm’s contribution to projects is vital to The Weber Studio’s success. She has an affinity for structural detailing and a strong dedication to accuracy. Fromm is personally invested in each project and uses her visualization expertise to communicate designs to clients.
Mauricio Salazar, LEED AP brings the knowledge of green building practices to the firm. He has a passion for architecture, a strong work ethic, and the ability to simultaneously handle multiple projects.
The firm believes that designing a custom home is a collaborative effort. Clients, architects, engineers, interior designers, contractors, and numerous consultants are required. Throughout the design process, communication is crucial. “The Weber Studio operates on the principal that communication is fundamental – a standard that benefits the design and the client alike” Weber says.
At the start of each design, the firm learns as much as possible about each client. This allows the team to create the framework that will guide every phase of the process. The team is dedicated to ensuring its vision is fully understood by the client in the early stages of the project. A series of design options are provided and clients are encouraged to voice every idea, from minute details to those that seem beyond the realm of possibility.
“It is difficult-to-define-qualities, the nuances of daily life, that make a home unique,” Fromm says. “It is factors like these that inspire residences that genuinely reflect each family’s distinctiveness.”
When addressing the atmosphere, a client wishes to create, the firm often discusses that positive feeling that one gets when entering a great space – a feeling the firm believes is a defining quality of good architecture. “Within you is evoked an intangible sense of correctness when entering a great space,” Weber says. “Good architecture can invite you in, guide you, show you the path, the entrance, where to sit, stand, or rest.”
Weber and his team believe that the truth of architecture should be based on the appropriate use of materials. “We discourage the falsification of a home with hollow decorative elements,” Weber says. Instead, strong, authentic materials like heavy wood timbers, natural stone, and raw concrete are employed to realize that truth. “Each of these materials has characteristics that draw out certain attitudes and can be capitalized on in order to achieve the desired ambiance.
The firm understands that the goal of a design is not to create personal prestige. Instead, the studio’s designers are driven by different goals – the goals of listening, recognizing, coordinating the diverse professionals that work on the project, and focusing on the homeowner’s wishes, all the while guiding the client step by step through the process.
“The result is a progression that is enjoyable. It fulfills both functional and emotional requirements, as well as produces an aesthetic masterwork,” Weber says.
The firm is located on Key Biscayne in Miami and works on projects throughout the United States and the Caribbean. Its designers consider it a privilege to have South Florida’s landscape as the backdrop to many of their designs.
The Weber Studio chooses to remain small. In doing so, the firm believes each team member is able to participate in every design, fully utilizing individual talents. Fewer projects permit greater dedication to each job, allowing more frequent site visits and helping to ensure that the designer’s vision is accurately articulated.
“Long – lasting relationships begin to develop with all of our clients – relationships that start with the initial consultation and continue to grow and evolve long after the projects are completed,” Weber says.
These relationships lead to repeated referrals. Nearly all of the firm’s commissions come from personal recommendations – not only from homeowners, but from contractors and consultants as well.
“Each new home is not just another house – it is a chance to interpret the client’s vision into a distinctive residence, all the while enjoying the process.” Weber says. “The ultimate compliment at the end of a project is a happy client turned lifelong friend.”
